Since last year I developed chronic pain that doesn't respond to any meds or treatments and it's ruined my life so now I spend every waking moment in constant discomfort. At least I've still got ponies even though it's harder to enjoy them since I never really feel like myself anymore. Enjoy every moment, it could always get worse.

Now this is something I can also give my advice on. Game design as a program is pretty much only useful for the connections and internships you might get out of it, as getting your foot in the door is as cancerous as can be. Now, programming is much more versatile, this is true, but if you're willing to put in the effort and I mean the EFFORT to get EVERYTHING out of a more creative degree such as Game Design (and this means using every little resource at your disposal and working outside of school on other projects) you'll eventually go somewhere. I tried programming for two to three years and I loathed most of it, which shouldn't be the case. A CS degree can get you a comfy desk job, since actual video game companies only care for the work you've done anyway. Study what you like doing, it makes things a whole lot easier.

I really can't tell you much on the hardware end, but the important thing is to know C. That's about it. If you want to be a programmer, then search in places that aren't typical silicon valley areas. I wish I could help more, but I don't really deal with the HW engineers.
